31 hurt, over 300 houses damaged in S. Leyte quake — NDRRMC

A MAGNITUDE 5.8 earthquake the jolted San Francisco, Southern Leyte on Thursday has left 31 people injured and over 300 houses and several roads and bridges damaged, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

According to the NDRRMC, they are validating the report of the people hurt by the tremor.

Some six houses were totally damaged while 342 homes were partially damaged.

Of the damaged houses, 197 were located in San Francisco, which bore the brunt of the strongest quake that hit the province in over 15 years.

Seven houses were destroyed in Bgy. Malico, a known landslide-prone area.

In Liloan municipality, the quake sent boulders to portions of the road in Bgy. Tubugon.

The epicenter of the quake was recorded at 7:39 a.m. on Thursday in San Francisco town.

It was tectonic in origin, with a depth of 11 kms..

The NDRRMC said 49 infrastractures in the province were also damaged by the ground shaking.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that as of Friday, over 160 aftershocks were recorded.
