TWO vans found carrying more than P2.2 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes were intercepted by agents of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group conducting an anti-carnapping operation in Pulilan, Bulacan last Tuesday, PNP-HPG director Brig. Gen. Eleazar P. Matta said yesterday.

The drivers of the two vans and their three co-workers are now undergoing investigation for violation of Republic Act 7394 (Consumer Act of the Philippines), RA 10863 (Custom Modernization Act), RA 10643 (An Act to Effectively instill Health Consciousness through Graphic Health Warnings on Tobacco Products and RA 8424 National Internal Revenue Code of 1997), said the PNP-HPG head in a report to PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil.

The official said that members of the Regional Highway Patrol Unit 3 headed by Lt. Col. Joey T. Caise intercepted the vehicles along the Pulilan Bpass Road in Bgy. Dulong Malabon past 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The drivers of the two vehicles were flagged down for not wearing seatbelts and having broken windshields. Both also failed to present their registration papers.

Discovered inside the two vehicles – a close van and a Hyundai Starex – were 150 master cases of Red Golden Dragon tobacco products which were believed to be all smuggled products.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue is helping in the investigation of the case as the vehicles were subjected to a verification with the Land Transportation Office.
