SOME 115 Filipinos in Sri Lanka have requested the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to be repatriated back home.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo Jose de Vega, said more or less 115 of the total 700 Filipinos in Sri Lanka have indicated their desire to go home.

Sri Lanka was placed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) under Alert Level 2 due to the ongoing economic and political tensions there.

De Vega said most of the 700 Filipinos married to Sri Lankans have decided to stay with their families.

“Sa 700 na Pilipino doon, mayroon na mga 100 na parang nagsabi na na gusto nilang makauwi pero karamihan will stay there. Alam naman natin na bukod sa may family sila doon, ang mga Filipino are very resilient and ready to face all challenges,” he explained.

For the 115 who have opted to leave Sri Lanka, the Undersecretary said they are looking at purchasing commercial plane tickets to bring them back to the Philippines before the month ends.

“Ang gusto namin bago matapos ang July may nakauwi na dapat,” he said.

The DFA undersecretary added they are considering extending financial assistance to the 600 Filipinos who will remain in Sri Lanka.

He said the chargé d’affaires in Dhaka is now trying to find a way to extend the “ayuda” to the rest of the Filipinos there.
